How big a cake do you need?

A simple guide to servings, so you neither run short nor waste half a tier.

The most common question we get is how much cake to order. The answer depends on how the cake is served, not just how many people come.

For a birthday where the cake is the dessert, plan on 100 grams a person. Twenty guests need about 2 kg. If there is another dessert, or the cake is cut after a full dinner, 70 grams is plenty, and you can go down a size.

Wedding cakes are cut in thinner, taller slices called finger portions, about 2.5 cm wide. A three-tier cake of 15, 20 and 25 cm serves around 60 that way. Many couples order a smaller display cake and a plain kitchen cake that is cut out of sight, which saves money and keeps the design simple.

Remember that sculpted figures, sugar flowers and fondant decorations add weight without adding servings. When you send us your guest count we work out the size for you and write the servings on the sketch, so you can check before you pay.
