Why boxes fail in the monsoon

Moisture, stacking and a few small changes that keep cartons standing.

Every year from June to September, we get calls about collapsed cartons in warehouses. The boxes were fine in April. The difference is water in the air.

Kraft paper absorbs moisture from humid air. At 90% humidity, a corrugated box can lose 40–50% of its stacking strength. Boxes at the bottom of a stack, or against a damp wall, give way first, and the product inside takes the damage.

A few changes help a great deal. Store boxes on pallets, never on the floor, and away from walls. Do not stack higher in the monsoon than you need to. Use the boxes in the order they arrived, so none sit for months. And ask for a higher-grade liner or a moisture-resistant coating for products that are stored long.

We test samples of our board for compression strength after conditioning them at high humidity. If your products are stored in coastal or rainy areas, tell us. We will adjust the paper grade and show you the test results before the season begins.
