The last week before schools open is our busiest. When to book, what most schools allow and how we handle nervous children.

Every year, the week before Chennai’s schools reopen in June, our shop fills with children. Parents who have let hair grow through the summer holidays suddenly need a short, neat cut that will pass the morning assembly check. A little planning saves a long wait.
Book a week early. The three days before reopening are fully booked by the end of May, usually with waiting lists. A cut done a week ahead still looks tidy on the first day, and we are less rushed. Our junior cut for children under twelve takes about 25 minutes and costs ₹300.
Check the school rules. Most schools in Anna Nagar and nearby ask for hair above the collar and off the ears for boys, with no designs, steps or very short fades. Some allow a short crop; some insist on a side parting. If you are not sure, bring the school diary or a photo of the rule, and we will cut to it.
For young children, especially those who have not had a barbershop cut before, come at a quiet hour like a weekday morning in the last week of May. Let them watch an older sibling or a parent first. Our junior chair has a booster seat, and barbers use scissors rather than clippers near the ears for children who dislike the noise. A parent can sit beside them throughout. If a child is very upset, we stop, finish the essentials and let them come back another day at no extra cost.
