De-tan after a Chennai summer: what a clean-up does

Sun, sweat and dust between March and June: what happens in our 35-minute clean-up and what to do at home.

From March to June, Chennai men spend hours on two-wheelers and at bus stops in strong sun, humid air and road dust. By the end of the summer, many notice that the face has darkened unevenly, the nose and forehead are oily and the skin feels rough. Our de-tan face clean-up is the service most asked for in July.

It takes about 35 minutes and costs ₹700. The barber first cleanses the face with a mild face wash and checks the skin under good light. Then comes a gentle scrub, worked in small circles for two or three minutes, which lifts dead skin and dust. Steam opens the pores for about five minutes, and blackheads on the nose and chin are removed with a sterilised tool, never squeezed with fingers. A de-tan pack of curd, gram flour and a mild fruit extract goes on for ten minutes, followed by a cool towel and a light moisturiser.

We do not promise any change in skin colour, and we do not use bleach. What most customers notice is that the skin looks cleaner and more even and feels less oily for a week or two.

At home, the habits that help most are simple. Wash your face with a mild cleanser twice a day, not more. Use a sunscreen on the face before riding, even on cloudy days. Wear a cotton handkerchief or a full-face helmet on long rides. Drink plenty of water, and come back for a clean-up every four to six weeks through the summer.
