The itchy weeks, the heat and the patchy cheeks: what to expect and what helps.

The first four weeks are the hardest. New hair is coarse at the tip and it itches against the skin, more so in humid weather. Wash your beard with a mild face wash every evening and pat it dry; sweat and dust trapped in the hair make the itch worse.
Do not trim to tidy it in the first month except at the neckline. Patchy cheeks often fill in by week eight, and an early trim just resets the clock. If it still looks uneven at two months, a barber can shape it so the fuller areas carry the look.
Beard oil helps more than balm in Chennai. Three or four drops, rubbed between the palms and worked down to the skin, softens the hair without feeling heavy. Coconut oil works too but can smell after a day in the sun.
From month two, get a line-up every three weeks. A clean neckline, about two fingers above the Adam’s apple, and a sharp cheek line make even a short beard look intentional. We do this in 25 minutes, with a hot towel at the end.
