Keeping your fade sharp between visits

A fade looks its best for about ten days. Here is what you can do at home, and what to leave to the barber.

A skin fade is the sharpest cut we do, and also the one that grows out fastest. Hair grows about a centimetre a month, so the shortest part of a fade, which starts at almost nothing, begins to look fuzzy within a week. You can keep it looking clean for longer with a few habits.

Wash your hair every day or every other day in Chennai weather. Sweat and oil make short hair clump, which shows the outgrowth more. Use a light shampoo and cool water, and towel dry by patting rather than rubbing, so the top does not frizz.

Style the top, not the sides. A small amount of matte clay or cream on the top draws attention upwards and away from the fading sides. Avoid heavy gels, which flake in humidity and make the sides look darker.

Leave the clippers alone. Many customers try to clean up the fade at home with a trimmer and end up with a hard line or an uneven patch that takes three weeks to grow out. If the neck or the area around the ears bothers you, you can tidy that with a small trimmer, holding the mirror behind you. Everything else is best left to us. Every fade at Kaththi includes a free line-up within ten days, which takes about ten minutes. Most of our regulars come back every two to three weeks for a full fade, and use the line-up in between.
