Plate prices, servers, vessels and travel: how we price a wedding or housewarming lunch for 50 to 1,000 guests.

Families planning a housewarming, a seemantham or a wedding lunch usually ask us one question first: what will it cost per head? The honest answer depends on the menu, the number of guests and how far we travel, so here is how we work it out.
Our leaf meals start at ₹320 a plate for a full vegetarian meal: rice, sambar, rasam, kootu, two poriyals, appalam, pickle, curd, a payasam and a banana. Adding a second sweet, such as a kesari or a jangiri, adds ₹35 to ₹45. A Kongu non-vegetarian meal, with Sunday-style biryani and a chicken or mutton curry cooked in our separate section, starts at ₹480. The minimum is 50 guests.
The plate price includes cooking, banana leaves, our vessels, water and our servers in uniform, one server for every 25 to 30 guests. Within 10 km of RS Puram there is no travel charge; beyond that, we charge ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 depending on distance, for the van and the staff’s time. For a hall without a kitchen, we bring gas burners and set up a cooking area outside, which adds ₹2,500.
As an example, a housewarming lunch for 150 guests in Saravanampatti, with one extra sweet, comes to about ₹57,000 including travel. We ask for 30 percent to book the date and the rest on the day. Book at least 10 days ahead, and a month ahead for weddings in Thai and Vaikasi, when our dates fill quickly.
