Two minutes of wrapping protects the small bones you punch with. Here is the way our coaches teach it.

Hand wraps are not optional. The small bones in the back of your hand and your wrist take every punch, and a glove alone does not hold them together. A 4.5-metre cotton wrap, put on properly, does.
Start with the thumb loop, then go round the wrist three times, firm but not tight. Cross over the back of the hand and wrap the knuckles three times, keeping your fingers spread so the wrap does not cramp them when you make a fist. Then weave between each finger, starting from the little finger side, crossing back to the wrist after each one.
Finish with a few more turns round the knuckles and the wrist, and close the velcro on the inside of the wrist. Make a fist: it should feel solid, with no loose fabric over the knuckles and no tingling in the fingers.
Wash wraps after every two sessions, and roll them up from the velcro end so they are ready to go. Our coaches will wrap your hands for your first few classes; ask them to go slowly so you learn.
