Wind speed, roof pitch, bracing and anchor bolts: what keeps steel buildings on the Visakhapatnam coast standing through October storms.

Our coast sees cyclones most years, usually between October and December, and the strongest of them bring wind gusts well above 150 km/h. A steel shed that is fine inland can lose its roof here. Designing for wind is the most important part of our engineering work for coastal clients.
It starts with the basic wind speed in the Indian wind code. For Visakhapatnam and much of coastal Andhra Pradesh, it is 50 m/s, among the highest in the country, and important buildings are designed with an extra factor on top. Wind does not only push on walls; it lifts roofs. On a shallow-pitched roof, the suction on the sheets can be greater than their weight, so roof fixings matter as much as the frames.
Several details make the difference. We use closer purlin spacing near the edges, ridges and corners, where suction is strongest. Roof sheets are fixed with more screws in those zones, through the crest, with sealing washers. Wall and roof bracing is designed to carry wind loads to the foundations, and anchor bolts are sized for uplift as well as weight. Large doors are designed with wind locks, because an open roller shutter lets wind inside and lifts the roof from below.
Before each cyclone season, walk round your building. Check for loose or missing roof screws, rusted bracing rods, damaged gutters and sheets lifting at the eaves. Repairs in September cost far less than replacements in November. Our maintenance crew can inspect a shed in a day.
