What Darjeeling and Gangtok cost a family of four

Package price, train tickets, meals and the extras people forget: a full budget for six nights in the hills.

Our Darjeeling and Gangtok package costs ₹21,500 per person on twin sharing, ex-Kolkata, for six nights. Families often ask what the whole holiday will cost once everything is added. Here is a worked budget for two parents and two children aged 8 and 12, travelling in October.

The package for two adults comes to ₹43,000. Children sharing their parents’ room with an extra bed are charged about 60% of the adult price, so ₹25,800 for both. That covers hotels with breakfast and dinner, a private car for all transfers and sightseeing, and the guide for Tsomgo Lake. Train tickets are separate. AC three-tier from Howrah to New Jalpaiguri and back for four people costs about ₹10,000 in total. Flights to Bagdogra are faster but, in the Puja season, cost three to four times as much.

Then the extras. Lunches and snacks for four, about ₹1,200 a day, add ₹7,200. The Darjeeling toy train joy ride, the ropeway in Gangtok and entry tickets come to around ₹4,000. Warm clothes, if you need to buy them, can cost ₹3,000 to ₹5,000. Shopping, tea and tips are up to you; most families spend ₹5,000 to ₹8,000.

All together, a typical family of four spends around ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,10,000 for the week. You can lower it by travelling in early November after the Puja rush, choosing a simpler hotel in Gangtok, or skipping Tsomgo. We send every quote with a breakdown like this, so there are no surprises.
