Do houseplants really clean the air?

A common reason people buy plants, and a common myth. What plants do and do not do for the air in your flat.

Many customers tell us they want plants to purify the air, often after reading that a snake plant or a peace lily will clean a room. We would rather be honest than sell more plants, so here is what is known.

The idea comes largely from laboratory experiments in sealed chambers, where plants did remove some chemicals from small volumes of air over many hours. A real flat is very different. Air moves in and out through windows, doors and fans far faster than any plant can work. To make a measurable difference to indoor air, you would need many plants per square metre of floor, far more than any home can hold.

So plants do not replace ventilation or an air purifier. If you live near a busy road like Outer Ring Road or Hosur Road, opening windows at the right time of day and keeping dust down will do far more for your air.

That does not mean plants do nothing worth having. Rooms with plants feel calmer and more lived-in, and caring for something living is a good habit. Plants also add a little humidity, which many people find pleasant in Bengaluru’s dry months. Just choose them for the right reasons: because you like how they look, because your light suits them, and because you will enjoy looking after them. If anyone promises that a single plant will purify your home, be wary. A snake plant on a desk is a fine companion, and that is enough.
