Visiting the kisan mela in Ludhiana as an implement buyer

How to plan a day at the March or September farmers’ fair, compare implements and avoid buying on impulse.

Twice a year, in March before the kharif season and in September before the rabi season, farmers from across Punjab and neighbouring states come to the large kisan mela held at the agricultural university campus in Ludhiana. It is one of the best places to see new implements and seed varieties in one day. Our stall is there every year.

Arrive early, by 9 am, as the crowd and the parking queue build up fast by late morning. The fair is spread across a large campus, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Start with the university’s own stalls and demonstration plots, where the scientists explain new varieties and recommended practices for the season ahead. Then walk the implement section, which takes two to three hours if you stop at most stalls.

To compare implements properly, take photos of the specification board at each stall and note the HP range, working width, weight and price quoted. Ask each maker the same questions: which tractor it needs, what wears out first and what a set of wear parts costs, and where the nearest dealer and spares are. Pick up the leaflets and take them home, rather than deciding on the spot.

Many makers, ourselves included, offer a mela booking price that is valid for a few weeks after the fair, so there is no need to pay on the day. Take your time, talk to farmers in your village who own each implement, and ask your nearest dealer for a field demonstration before you sign.
