Caring for a cane chair

Simple habits that keep the weave tight for twenty years.

Cane is the outer skin of a rattan palm, split into thin strips and woven by hand. It is strong, light and comfortable, and with a little care it lasts for decades.

The biggest enemy is dryness. Cane that dries out becomes brittle and starts to snap. Once a month, wipe the seat and back with a damp cloth, from underneath as well as on top. In the dry months before the monsoon, you can do it every two weeks.

Direct sun is the second enemy. A chair on a veranda that gets the afternoon sun will fade and dry faster. Move it back a little, or throw a cotton cloth over it in the hottest hours.

Avoid sitting on the edge of the seat or kneeling on it; the weight on a small area strains the strands. If one breaks, do not pull it out. Bring the chair to us, or send a photo on WhatsApp. A small repair costs a few hundred rupees, and a full re-cane of a seat costs ₹2,800 and takes a week.
