Keeping your CCTV system healthy
A recording that stopped three weeks ago is only found after a theft.
The worst call we get is from a customer who needs footage and finds the recorder stopped working weeks ago. It happens more often than people think, and it is easy to prevent.
Check the recording once a week. Open the app, pick any camera and play back a minute from the previous night. If it plays, recording works. Many recorders can also send an alert if a disk fails; we turn this on at installation.
Clean the lenses every few months. Dust, spider webs and Lucknow’s winter fog leave a film that blurs the image, especially at night when the infrared light reflects off it.
Watch the power. Frequent cuts and voltage spikes damage power supplies and disks. A small UPS for the recorder protects both and keeps recording through short cuts.
Finally, change the default passwords and update firmware once a year. Our maintenance visits cover all of this, with a short report after each visit.
