Staying hydrated in a Kolkata summer

Water first, electrolytes when you sweat a lot, and signs to watch in older family members.

April to June in Kolkata brings heat and humidity that drains the body faster than people expect. Here is practical advice from our pharmacists; if you have a heart or kidney condition, ask your doctor how much fluid is right for you.

Drink water steadily through the day rather than a lot at once. Keep a bottle with you when you travel by bus or metro. Thirst often arrives after the body is already short of water.

When you sweat heavily, from outdoor work, long commutes or exercise, you lose salts as well as water. An electrolyte drink, or simple home options like lemon water with a pinch of salt and sugar, or daab water, helps replace them.

Watch older family members and young children carefully. They feel thirst less and may not ask for water. Dark urine, dizziness, a dry mouth, headache or unusual tiredness are signs to drink more and rest in a cool place.

If someone becomes confused, stops sweating, faints or has a very high temperature, treat it as an emergency and get medical help at once.

Light cotton clothes, an umbrella and avoiding the sun between noon and 3 pm help as much as anything we sell.
