Making a phone battery last longer

Five habits that keep a battery healthy past its second year.

A phone battery is the part that wears out first, and most of the wear comes from heat and from living at full or empty for long stretches.

Keep it cool. Do not charge the phone under a pillow, on the car dashboard or while playing games for an hour. If the back feels hot, take the cover off while it charges. Summer in Hyderabad is hard on batteries, and we see the swelling in May and June.

Avoid the extremes. Charging from 20% to 80% is gentler than running down to zero and filling to 100% every night. Many phones now have an option to stop at 80% or to finish charging just before you wake up. Turn it on.

Use a good-quality charger. A cheap charger can deliver uneven power and heat the battery. Buy from a shop that will stand behind it, and replace frayed cables.

Finally, check the battery health once a year in settings. Below 80%, a replacement costs far less than a new phone. We replace most batteries in about an hour, with a 6-month warranty on the new one.
