A safer Diwali on the terrace

Cotton clothes, a bucket of water and sand, and an adult beside every child.

Most Jaipur families light their crackers on the roof, which is a good place if it is clear. Move plants, chairs and drying clothes to one side, and check there are no wires overhead before you bring out a sky shot.

Wear cotton, not silk or synthetic, and tie back dupattas and long hair. Keep a bucket of water and a bucket of sand within reach, and drop every used sparkler wire into the water.

Light one item at a time, at arm’s length, using a long agarbatti or a sparkler rather than a matchbox. If something does not light or stops halfway, leave it for 15 minutes and then pour water on it. Never bend over it or try to relight it.

Children should always have an adult beside them, and the kids’ box is chosen so that there is nothing loud inside. Follow the hours Rajasthan announces for Diwali each year, and keep unused boxes indoors, away from the diyas.
