Legs on or off, how much floor to leave and the three sizes that suit most Indian living rooms.

The most common mistake we see is a rug that is too small. A small rug in the middle of a room makes the furniture float and the room look smaller. A few simple rules help.
In a living room, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it. Leave about 30 to 45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls. In most Indian flats, with living rooms around 12 × 15 ft, a 6 × 9 ft or 8 × 10 ft rug works best.
Under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the table on every side, so the chairs stay on it when pulled out. For a six-seater, that usually means 8 × 10 ft. A flatweave dhurrie is easier here than a pile rug, because chairs slide and crumbs sweep off.
In a bedroom, either put a large rug under the bed with about 60 cm showing on each side, or use two small rugs or runners on either side. Before you buy, mark the size on your floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. If none of the standard sizes fit, we weave to any size. Send us the room measurements and a photo, and we will suggest one.
