Caring for a hand-knotted rug at home

Vacuum gently, turn it twice a year and deal with spills quickly: a short guide to keeping a rug for decades.

A well-made hand-knotted rug is tough. Many of the rugs we wash and repair are older than the people who bring them in. Most of the damage we see comes from a few avoidable habits.

Vacuum once a week with suction only, no beater brush, and go in the direction of the pile. Run your hand across the rug to find it: one way feels smooth, the other rough. Do not vacuum the fringes; they get sucked in and torn. Turn the rug 180 degrees every six months so it wears and fades evenly. Jaipur sun is strong, and a rug near a window can fade on one side in a single summer.

For spills, blot at once with a clean white cloth, working from the edge inwards. Do not rub. Dab with cold water and a little mild wool wash if needed, then blot dry. For anything oily, or a large stain, call us before you try anything stronger.

Use a rug pad on hard floors. It stops slipping and reduces wear. Keep potted plants off rugs, because damp from below rots the foundation. Moths like dark, undisturbed wool, so vacuum under furniture too. Every three to five years, depending on traffic, a rug should be washed professionally. We wash rugs in our yard with water and a mild soap, and dry them flat in the sun.
