Choosing frames for your face

Frame width matters more than face shape. Start there, then choose a style.

Most frame advice is about face shape: round frames for square faces, square frames for round ones. It is a fine place to start, but the first thing to get right is size.

Look at the three numbers printed inside the temple, such as 49-20-145. The first is the lens width in millimetres, the second is the bridge, and the third is the temple length. A frame that is too wide will slide down your nose; one that is too narrow will press at the temples and leave marks.

The outer edge of the frame should line up roughly with the widest part of your face. Your eyes should sit near the centre of each lens, not near the inside edge. If you wear a strong prescription, a smaller lens means thinner edges.

Once the size is right, choose a style you like looking at. Bring a friend, or ask us to take photos of you in five frames so you can compare them side by side. Most people choose better from a photo than from the mirror.
