What paint correction can and cannot fix

A simple fingernail test tells you most of what you need to know.

Paint correction is the careful removal of a tiny layer of clearcoat to level out swirls and scratches. Done well, it brings back gloss the car has not had in years. Done badly, it can burn through the clearcoat.

It works on the defects in the clear top layer: swirl marks from washing, water spots, light scratches from bags and fingernails around door handles, and the haze that builds up after years in the sun. These make up most of what people see as dull paint.

It cannot fix scratches that go through the clearcoat into the colour. Run your fingernail across the scratch. If the nail catches, the scratch is usually too deep. We can make it less visible, but removing it fully would mean cutting away too much protection.

That is why we measure. A paint-depth gauge tells us how thick the paint is on each panel, and we stay well within a safe margin. Some cars have been repainted or polished many times, and we will tell you if a panel cannot take another correction.
