For highway driving and new cars, often yes; for city-only cars, a coating is usually enough.

Paint protection film is a clear urethane layer that sits on top of the paint and takes stone chips so the paint does not. It is the most expensive thing we fit, so it deserves an honest answer.
It is worth it if you drive the highway often. The Ahmedabad–Vadodara expressway and the roads to Rajasthan throw up gravel, and the bonnet, bumper and mirrors take the hits. Within a year, an unprotected front end can carry dozens of small chips. Film stops most of them.
It is also worth it on a new car you plan to keep for many years, or on a dark colour where chips show clearly.
For a car that stays in the city, a ceramic coating is usually enough. It does not stop chips, but it protects against sun, dust and bird droppings and makes washing easier.
Many customers choose both: film on the front panels and a coating everywhere else. The film can be coated too, which keeps it easy to clean.
