Ceramic coating, sealant or wax: how they compare

Three ways to protect paint, from a ₹1,500 wax to a ₹24,999 coating. How long each lasts and who each one suits.

Customers often come in asking for a ceramic coating because a friend had one. Sometimes it is the right choice, and sometimes a simpler protection would serve them better. Here is how the three main options compare.

Wax is the oldest. A carnauba or synthetic wax is applied by hand over clean paint, gives a warm gloss and makes water bead. In Ahmedabad’s heat and dust it lasts four to eight weeks before the beading fades. It costs about ₹1,500 at our studio, added to a wash, and suits owners who enjoy caring for the car every month. A polymer sealant is a synthetic layer that bonds to the paint more firmly than wax. It lasts about four to six months, resists heat better, and costs around ₹4,500 with a wash and decontamination. It is a good middle path for a car that is a few years old and parked outdoors.

A ceramic coating is a liquid glass-like layer that hardens into a thin, durable film over the clearcoat. Ours carries a written three-year warranty, with yearly inspections. It resists bird droppings, hard water and UV better than the other two, and makes weekly washing much quicker. Because it locks in whatever is underneath, the paint must be corrected first, which is why it takes two days and costs ₹24,999.

As a rule: if you plan to keep the car for three years or more, a coating makes sense. If you sell cars every two years or lease them, a sealant twice a year costs less and does the job.
