Shopping for bridal accessories in old Hyderabad

Bangles at Laad Bazaar, flowers from Gudimalkapur and dupatta pins near Charminar: a practical morning in the old city.

Much of what finishes a bridal look, the bangles, the flowers, the hair accessories, is still best bought in the old city. Brides often ask where to go, so here is the route our team uses before the wedding season.

Start at Laad Bazaar, the lane of bangle shops that runs west from the Charminar. Lac bangles set with glass stones have been made here for generations, and you can have a set matched to your outfit in an hour or two while you wait. Take a fabric swatch and your bridal blouse colour. A full bridal set of lac bangles usually costs between ₹2,500 and ₹8,000, depending on the work.

In the lanes around the Charminar, look for hair accessories: jhoomars, passas, maang tikkas, juda pins and the small U-pins we use to secure a dupatta. Buy two or three dozen pins in a colour that matches your hair, and bring them to the trial.

For fresh flowers, the Gudimalkapur flower market near Mehdipatnam opens before dawn. Jasmine, kanakambaram and rose strings for South Indian hairdos are cheapest there, but they wilt in a day, so order them for the wedding morning and ask for delivery by 5 am. Our team can coordinate this with your florist. Go on a weekday morning before 11 am, when the lanes are calmer. Wear comfortable footwear, carry cash and water, and keep a bag that closes properly. If you would like one of our artists to come along to match colours, we offer a two-hour shopping visit for ₹2,000.
