Getting your car ready for the monsoon

What to check in August so the October rains do not cost you a repaint.

The northeast monsoon hits Chennai from October, and the first heavy rains bring acid, dust and leaves straight onto the paint. A little preparation in August and September saves trouble.

First, protect the paint. A coated car is in good shape; book its yearly check and top-up layer. An uncoated car should at least get a wash, decontamination and a sealant, which lasts three to four months and makes muddy water slide off.

Check the rubber. Clean the door and boot seals and wipe them with a rubber protectant so they seal well. Clear the scuttle panel under the wipers and the sunroof drains, where leaves block water and send it into the cabin.

Look at the headlights and wipers. Hazy headlights halve your visibility on a dark, wet road; restoration takes two hours. Replace wiper blades if they streak.

Inside, add rubber floor mats and keep a microfibre towel in the car. If water gets in, dry carpets the same day; damp foam smells within a week. If your car is ever in standing water above the sills, call us for an interior dry-out before mould sets in.
