Between two clients: how we clean every station

Brushes, combs, towels and chairs. The fifteen minutes between appointments that nobody sees.

We book fewer clients than most salons, and part of the reason is the time we leave between appointments. At least fifteen minutes goes into cleaning and resetting each chair before the next person sits down. Here is what happens in that time.

Every makeup brush used on a client is washed in a mild brush cleanser, rinsed and laid flat to dry on a rack; it is not used again that day. We keep three full sets per artist so there is always a clean set ready. Sponges and puffs are single-use, given to the client or thrown away. Lipsticks and creams are never applied straight from the tube; we scrape a little onto a steel palette with a spatula, and the palette is wiped with alcohol afterwards.

Combs, clips and hair tools are washed in warm soapy water and then soaked in a disinfectant solution for the time the label requires, usually ten minutes. Scissors and nail tools go into a steriliser after every use. Towels and capes are used once and go into a laundry bag; we wash about 120 towels a day at 60 °C. The chair, the armrests and the mirror shelf are wiped down, and the bin is emptied.

We also open new products in front of you, so you can see they are sealed, and we list the products for any bridal look in writing before the trial. If you ever want to see our cleaning area, ask. Kavitha, who manages the studio, is happy to show anyone round.
