Selling beyond Deepavali: a dealer’s calendar to May

Deepavali brings most of the year’s sales, but a shop that plans for Karthigai, weddings and temple festivals sells far longer.

For most of our 600 dealers, the six weeks before Deepavali bring in about three quarters of the year’s sales. The shops that do best, though, keep selling until May. Here is the calendar they plan around.

Karthigai Deepam falls about a month after Deepavali, in late November or early December. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra it is a strong second season for sparklers, flower pots and small chakkars. Keep back about 10 percent of your sparkler stock for it, rather than discounting it on the day after Deepavali. From December to February comes the wedding season, along with New Year and Pongal. Garlands, 12-shot cakes and colour sparklers sell steadily to wedding parties and event organisers. Christmas brings a smaller rush in Kerala and parts of Karnataka.

From January to May, temple festivals across Kerala and Tamil Nadu take sky shots by the carton. A committee may book 6 to 10 cartons of 60 and 120-shot cakes for one night, and they plan months ahead. Vishu in April is the last big date, with kambithiri and flower pots in demand across Kerala.

We make stock for these dates in the same April to October window, so book them in June along with your Deepavali order. We can split dispatch into two lorries, one in September and one in early November, at no extra charge from our side.
