Getting good photos with colour smoke

Wind, light, distance and the two seconds that matter: a short guide for couples and photographers using smoke canisters.

Colour smoke makes some of the best wedding and pre-wedding photos we see, and also some of the most disappointing ones. The difference usually comes down to wind, light and timing.

Each handheld canister burns for about 60 seconds. Our pack of six costs ₹4,800, in colours you choose: pink, yellow, violet, green, blue or white. Two or three canisters at once, in two colours, look fuller than six fired one after another. Shoot outdoors only; smoke indoors fills a room within seconds and sets off alarms.

Wind decides where the smoke goes. Stand with the wind blowing from behind the photographer towards the couple, so the smoke drifts past them and away, not into their faces. A light breeze is ideal; still air makes a heavy cloud that hides everyone, and strong wind blows it flat. Late afternoon, from about 4.30 pm in the winter months, gives soft side light that shows the colour well.

Keep the canister at arm’s length, held low and pointed away from clothes and hair. Smoke can stain light fabric, so brides often hand it to a friend standing just out of frame. Wear closed footwear and keep a bucket of water nearby for spent canisters, which stay hot for a few minutes. Our host walks you through it and lights each canister, and the photographer should be shooting from the first second, because the thickest, brightest smoke comes in the first ten.
