Green crackers: what the label on our boxes tells you

The label tells you who made a cracker and what mix it uses. Here is what that changes, and what it does not.

Over the last few years, most crackers made in Sivakasi have moved to green formulations, and every box we stock shows the maker’s name, batch and formulation. Customers in Kochi ask what it means, so here is a plain answer.

Green crackers use a changed chemical mix that produces less smoke and dust than older crackers. Some use fewer harmful compounds; some include ingredients that release water vapour to keep dust down. Sound levels are also kept within set limits.

What green crackers are not is harmless. They still burn hot, still make smoke, and still need the same care: open ground, a bucket of water and sand, cotton clothes and an adult beside children. In a closed courtyard with little breeze, smoke still lingers, so light outdoors where it can drift away.

There are small differences you might notice. Some green sparklers burn a little faster and with a slightly different colour. Some padakkam are quieter than the ones you remember from childhood. Families sometimes think a box is weak; it is simply the newer mix. If you want a particular effect, tell us what you liked last year and we will match it as closely as we can from this season’s stock. And if a box arrives without the maker’s name and batch on the label, please tell us; we will replace it.
