Visiting Peenya: a buyer’s guide to a factory trip
Getting to Peenya, where to stay, what a day at our factory involves and how to fit in mill and laundry visits in Bengaluru.
Many of our buyers visit before placing a first bulk order, and we welcome it. Here is what a visit to Saalu in Bengaluru usually involves.
Bengaluru’s airport is in the north of the city, about 35 km from Peenya. Allow 75 minutes in the morning traffic, longer after 5 pm. Most buyers stay in Yeshwanthpur or Malleswaram, which are 15 to 20 minutes from the factory and have good hotels, or near the airport if their trip is short. The Peenya Industrial Area metro station on the Green Line is a short drive from our gate.
A visit usually takes a full day. We start at 9.30 am with a meeting with your merchandiser, Kavya or Naveen, and go through your styles. Then a walk through the factory in the order a garment travels: fabric store and inspection, cutting room, sewing lines, finishing and packing. You can stop at any machine and ask questions, and you are welcome to talk to workers with our HR officer translating. Lunch is in our canteen, the same meal our workers eat.
In the afternoon, we can arrange a visit to the knitting and dyeing mill near Tiruppur, about five hours by road, for longer trips, or to our denim laundry partner at Doddaballapur, an hour away. Please wear closed shoes. Photos are fine on the factory floor, but ask before photographing people. Bengaluru is pleasant most of the year, though June to September brings afternoon rain.
