MPC or BiPC after Class 10: choosing with your child

How to choose between maths and biology streams, and between JEE and NEET, without guessing.

Every April, our desk fills with Class 10 families trying to decide between MPC and BiPC for intermediate. It is a decision that shapes the next two years and often the next ten, and it is usually made in a hurry. A few questions help.

Start with what the student enjoys and is good at, not what relatives suggest. Look at the Class 9 and 10 marks in maths and biology separately, and ask the child which homework they do first without being told. A student who finds algebra and geometry satisfying usually does well in MPC, which leads to JEE Main and engineering. A student who enjoys reading, diagrams and remembering detail often does better in BiPC, which leads to NEET, medicine and the life sciences.

Next, be honest about the competition. Both entrance exams are taken by lakhs of students, and the number of government seats is small. A student should choose a stream they would be content to study even if the top rank does not come, because both streams lead to many good degrees beyond engineering and medicine: architecture, pharmacy, agriculture, statistics, nursing, physiotherapy and more.

If you are still unsure, attend our Sunday demo class twice, once in a maths session and once in a biology one, and let the student sit our short aptitude test. Our counsellor, Lakshmi, will sit with the family for twenty minutes to talk through the results. There is no charge, and no pressure to join either course.
