Narrow lanes, boat transfers and baraat routes: practical notes for families and planners working around the lakes.

Udaipur’s old city is beautiful for a wedding, but it was not built for cars, vans and a band of twenty musicians. We have worked in the lanes around the lakes since 2014, and these are the practical things we wish every family knew before planning.
The lanes around the City Palace, Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat are narrow, and many are one-way or closed to large vehicles in the evening. Guests should be dropped at the nearest open point and walk the last few minutes, so plan for older relatives: a few auto-rickshaws or golf carts arranged by the venue help a lot. Ask your venue for a written map with drop points.
If your venue is on an island or across the lake, guests reach it by boat. Boats run on a fixed schedule and carry limited numbers, often 20 to 30 people per trip. A guest list of 300 can take an hour to move. Build this into the schedule, and send our crew on the first boat so we can film arrivals.
The baraat route needs permission from the local authorities, and in the old city it is usually short. Discuss it with your planner early, and keep it within the times allowed for music. A baraat that starts late often ends late, which pushes the pheras into the night. Finally, vendors need access too. Florists, caterers and our crew arrive hours before guests, often with heavy equipment. Arrange parking and a service entrance in advance. A wedding where the vendors can get in easily is almost always a wedding that runs on time.
