Choosing a first guitar

Comfort and playability matter more than the name on the headstock.

A first guitar decides how the first months feel. A guitar that hurts to play is the most common reason beginners give up.

Size matters for children. A 34- or 36-inch guitar suits most children of 10 to 12; teenagers and adults use a full 38- to 41-inch size. The student should be able to reach the first fret comfortably without stretching.

Check the action, the height of the strings above the neck. High strings are hard to press and hurt the fingertips. Ask the shop to set it up; a good set-up can make an inexpensive guitar play like a much dearer one.

Choose steel strings for an acoustic guitar if the student wants to play popular songs, or nylon strings if they find steel too painful at first. Nylon is gentler and suits classical styles.

A reasonable first acoustic guitar in Chennai costs ₹6,000 to ₹12,000. Bring it to class before the first lesson and our teachers will check the tuning and the set-up for you.
