Carnatic vocal or keyboard: a first course for your child

Age, temperament, home practice and goals: how to decide between our two most popular beginner courses.

Parents who visit us for the first time often cannot decide between Carnatic vocal and keyboard. Both are good first courses, and many children later learn the other. These are the questions we ask to help families choose.

How old is the child? Carnatic vocal starts from six and keyboard from seven, because reading music and coordinating both hands needs a little more maturity. A six-year-old who loves to sing will often be happiest starting with vocal.

What does the child enjoy? Children who sing all the time, hum songs back after one hearing or enjoy bhajans at home usually take to Carnatic vocal. Children who like puzzles, patterns and pressing buttons, or who are drawn to film or Western music, often enjoy keyboard more. Watch which one your child reaches for in the trial class.

What will practice look like at home? Carnatic vocal needs only a quiet corner and a shruti box or an app for the drone, so it is easy to practise anywhere, even while travelling. Keyboard needs an instrument at home after the first few months; a basic 61-key keyboard costs ₹8,000 to ₹14,000. What are the goals? Keyboard students can follow graded exams if they want a structured path with a clear test at each level. Carnatic vocal follows the traditional sequence of varisais, geethams and varnams, with performance at our concerts. Fees are ₹2,200 a month for vocal and ₹2,000 for beginner keyboard.
