16 or 20 inch: buying a child’s first bicycle

Wheel size goes by leg length, not age. How to choose, when to remove stabilisers and how our buy-back works.

Parents usually come in asking for a bicycle for a six-year-old or a nine-year-old. Age is a rough guide, but what really decides the size is the child’s inside leg, because they need to touch the ground comfortably with the balls of both feet while seated.

Our 16-inch kids’ bicycle at ₹6,250 suits most children from four to seven, with an inside leg of roughly 45 to 55 cm. It comes with stabilisers, a full chain guard so trousers do not catch, and a coaster brake or a single hand brake. Our 20-inch bicycle at ₹8,450 suits children from seven to ten, with an inside leg of around 55 to 65 cm. It has wider tyres for rough lanes and two hand brakes, which children need to learn to use properly before they ride on the road.

Resist the urge to buy one size up for the child to grow into. A bicycle that is too big is hard to control and frightening, and a child who is scared on the first day often does not want to try again. It is better to buy the right size now and move up later.

That is why we offer a buy-back. If your child outgrows a bicycle bought from us within two years, we take it back at 40 per cent of the price against a bigger one. A 16-inch bought for ₹6,250 brings ₹2,500 off a 20-inch. Bring your child to the shop for the first purchase, so we can measure, fit and let them try both sizes on our lane.
