Choosing crackers for a terrace, a street or an open ground

Where you light matters more than what you buy. How to match items to the space you actually have.

When families send us their list on WhatsApp, the first thing we ask is not the budget but the space. A box that is perfect for a temple ground can be a poor choice for a third-floor terrace.

For a terrace or a small courtyard, stay with sparklers, flower pots and ground chakkars. Our big flower pots throw a gold fountain about two metres high for 25 seconds, which is plenty in a closed space. Skip whistling rockets and garlands on a terrace; rockets need a clear sky above them and garlands throw paper and sparks sideways onto neighbours’ balconies.

On a residential street, add one or two colour cakes, such as the 12-shot, placed in the middle of the road on a flat stone with five metres clear on every side. Light garlands only if the street is wide, there are no parked two-wheelers close by, and someone keeps people back. A 1000 wala runs for about 50 seconds and spreads further than people expect.

An open ground, a field or a temple maidanam is where sky shots belong. The 60-shot multicolour and the 120-shot golden peacock need at least 25 metres of clear space around them and nothing overhead, no wires, trees or roofs. Whatever the space, keep a bucket of water and one of sand on hand, and place every item before lighting rather than holding it. Tell us your space when you write, and we will adjust the estimate to suit it.
