Dressing for a summer wedding
A mulmul kurta, a light jacket and the right trousers will see you through a May muhurtham in comfort.
Summer weddings in Tamil Nadu start early and run long. By the time lunch is served, the hall is warm and the silk shirts are wilting. Here is what our regulars wear instead.
For the ceremony, a white or ivory mulmul kurta is cool and looks right in photographs. Pair it with a veshti, or with straight trousers in linen-cotton if you will be travelling. Choose a kurta that ends just above the knee; longer kurtas get crushed when you sit on the floor.
For the reception, add a Nehru jacket rather than a full suit. A linen-wool jacket holds its shape in the evening and can be taken off without leaving you underdressed. Grey and navy go with almost every kurta colour.
Finally, plan alterations early. Bring the outfit to us two weeks before the wedding and we will check the length, sleeves and jacket fit, free, so nothing needs pinning on the morning itself.
