Hair oiling myths we hear every week

More oil, longer hair? Oil for dandruff? Plain answers to the questions that reach us on WhatsApp.

Hair oiling comes with a lot of family wisdom, some of it useful and some of it repeated without much thought. Here are the questions we answer most often, as honestly as we can.

More oil is not better. A tablespoon or two, warmed and massaged into the scalp, is plenty for most heads of hair. Pouring on more only means more shampoo to wash it out, and more chance of a greasy scalp. If oil drips down your neck, you have used too much. Oiling does not replace washing. Leaving oil on for days collects dust and sweat on the scalp, especially in summer. We suggest washing within a few hours, or the next morning if you oil at night.

Oil and dandruff need care. Dandruff has several causes, and for some people heavy oiling makes it worse, because the oil feeds the yeast on the scalp. If you have flaking or itching, oil less often, keep it on for an hour only, and see a dermatologist if it continues. We do not sell any product as a treatment for dandruff or hair fall.

Hair grows from the root, not from what you put on the ends. Oiling can make hair feel softer and look smoother, and the massage is relaxing, which is reason enough to do it. We do not promise more hair, faster growth or a change in colour, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Hair changes with age, diet, stress and health, and sudden or heavy hair fall needs a doctor, not a new oil.
