Copper tumblers: care, use and a few myths

Why copper darkens, how to clean it, how long to keep water in it, and what copper can and cannot do.

Our hammered copper tumblers are made by a family of coppersmiths who beat each one from a sheet with a small hammer, which leaves the dimpled surface. They are among our most popular pieces, and they come with more questions than anything else we sell.

Copper darkens and sometimes shows green spots as it reacts with air and water. This is normal. To clean it, rub with lemon and salt or tamarind pulp, inside and out, then rinse and dry at once with a cotton cloth. Do this once a week if you use the tumbler daily. Never put copper in a dishwasher, and avoid steel scrubbers, which scratch the surface.

Many people store water overnight in copper. That is a traditional practice, and the tumbler is suitable for it, but keep water in it for no longer than about eight hours and empty and dry it daily. Do not store lemon juice, buttermilk, pickles or anything acidic in copper; acid draws copper into the drink, which you do not want. Our tumblers are unlined copper, which is why we say this.

We hear many claims about copper water curing one thing or another. We do not make any health claims for our tumblers. They are beautiful, keep water cool for a while on a warm day and last a lifetime with care. If you are unsure whether copper suits you, especially during pregnancy or with a medical condition, ask your doctor. A pair of 300 ml tumblers is ₹1,680.
