Monsoon laundry: getting clothes truly dry

Why clothes smell musty in July, and what to do about it at home and with us.

The damp smell in monsoon laundry comes from bacteria that grow in fabric that stays wet too long. In Mumbai between June and September, clothes hung indoors can take two days to dry, and that is long enough.

At home, wash smaller loads so clothes spin drier, and use the highest spin speed the fabric allows. Hang clothes with space between them, under a fan, and turn thick items like jeans inside out. A spoon of white vinegar in the rinse helps remove odour.

Do not fold clothes until they are completely dry, including seams and pockets. Store them with a few silica gel packets in the cupboard, and leave the cupboard door open for an hour on dry days.

For heavy items like blankets, towels and curtains, a large dryer is the only reliable answer in peak monsoon. Our workshop dries every item fully before folding, and we check the thickest parts by hand before packing.
