Ceramic coating or PPF: which do you need?

A coating makes washing easy. Film stops stone chips. Many cars need only one.

Customers often ask whether to coat, film, or both. They do different jobs.

A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer bonded to the clear coat. It makes paint glossy and slick, so water beads, dust rinses off and bird droppings do less harm if you clean them soon. It does not stop stone chips or key scratches. For a city car that is washed often, a coating alone is usually enough.

Paint protection film is a thick, clear urethane layer. It absorbs stone chips and light scrapes, and small swirls heal in the sun. On OMR, ECR or highway runs to Bengaluru, the bumper and bonnet take a steady hail of grit; film there is worth the cost.

A common choice is film on the front end and a coating on the rest, with a coating over the film as well so it stays easy to clean. Budget around ₹55,000 for front film and ₹32,000 for the coating on a sedan.

Whichever you choose, the paint under it should be corrected first. Coating or film over swirls seals the swirls in.
