Beaches, hill parks and gardens that suit toddlers and preschoolers, with the best times to go and what to carry.

Vizag is a good city for small children. The sea is close, there are hills with views and green spaces where a three-year-old can run. Here are a few outings our families enjoy, with tips from parents.
RK Beach and the stretch towards the submarine museum are the easiest: flat promenade for strollers, sand to dig in and plenty of space. Go before 8 am or after 5 pm, when the sun is gentle. The sea along this coast has strong currents, so keep small children to the dry sand and the wet edge, holding hands, and never let them wade. Carry water, a change of clothes and a towel; sand ends up everywhere.
Kailasagiri, the hill park above the city, has wide lawns, a toy train and views of the bay. The ropeway thrills older children; for toddlers, the paths and gardens are enough. Weekday evenings are quieter than weekends. The Visakha Museum and the nearby beach parks are good on a hot afternoon, with shade and benches. For a half-day trip, the coastal road towards Bheemili has quieter beaches and fishing boats to watch from the shore.
With small children, plan short outings, two to three hours at most, and go around naps, not through them. Carry snacks, a cap and sunscreen. Our Saturday art and story club, from 10 am to noon, sometimes ends with drawings of the weekend’s trips; children love showing where they went.
