Hafiz Mehtab Ali opened a counter in Chowk in 1948 with attars from his cousins’ degs in Kannauj. His great-grandson Faiz still buys from the same distilling families, and still tests every batch on a cotton swab before it goes on the shelf.

Attar is a natural oil distilled into a sandalwood base, with no alcohol. Perfume sprays are usually synthetic oils in alcohol. Attar sits closer to the skin and lasts longer.
Dab one drop on the wrists, behind the ears and at the base of the throat. Do not rub; let it warm on the skin. On clothes, test a hidden spot first, as some attars stain silk.
