Restoring a 1978 turntable, step by step
Three weeks on Arijit’s bench: what a full restoration involves and why it takes so long.

What happens when you book the room, what to bring, and how to make the most of sixty minutes.

The listening room is upstairs from the shop, a small square room with soft walls, two armchairs and a sofa, and the systems we sell set up along one side. It holds up to four people. Booking is ₹500 for an hour, and that is adjusted against anything you buy the same day.
When you arrive, Arijit or Mitali will ask what you listen to and what you have at home. Then we start with a system close to your budget, playing one of your records or one of ours. Every few minutes we change one thing, the amplifier, the speakers or the cartridge, so you can hear what each part does.
Bring three or four records you know well. A familiar voice is the best test of a system. If you do not own records yet, tell us what you listen to on your phone and we will pull something close from the shelves.
You do not have to buy anything. Many people come back two or three times before deciding, and some never buy a deck at all, just records. Tea is on us. Please wear soft shoes if you can, as the floor is wooden, and keep phones on silent.
