Dry, cool, closed and out of reach: how to keep what is left after Diwali.

Almost every family has a few boxes left after Diwali, and many keep them for New Year or a wedding. They can be used later if they are stored properly.
First, sort what is left. Throw away anything that got wet, was dropped in mud, or was lit and failed to go off. Soak those in a bucket of water overnight before putting them in the bin. Keep only unopened or neatly closed boxes.
Pack them in a cardboard carton lined with newspaper, with a packet of silica gel if you have one. Close the carton and write the date on top. Store it in a dry, cool room, away from the kitchen, the puja diya, the inverter and any electric points, and high enough that children cannot reach it.
Check the carton before monsoon. If you see damp patches, swollen boxes or a smell of sulphur, do not use them. Most crackers are best used within a year of purchase. When in doubt, bring the boxes to the shop and we will take a look.
