How to size a home solar system

Start from your bill, not your roof; then check the roof can take it.

The right system size depends mainly on how many units you use, and our survey starts with your last twelve electricity bills.

In Jaipur, one kilowatt of panels produces around 4 to 4.5 units a day across the year, a little more in April and May and less in the haziest winter weeks. So a home using 360 units a month, or about 12 a day, needs roughly a 3 kW system to cover most of its bill.

Then look at the roof. Each kilowatt needs about 80 to 100 square feet of shade-free space. Water tanks, stair rooms, parapets and neighbouring buildings cast shadows that move through the day and the year. Our engineer maps them, because even a small shadow on one panel lowers the output of the whole string.

Finally, think about the next few years. If you plan to add an AC or an electric scooter, size up now; adding panels later costs more per kilowatt. And if power cuts are long in your area, choose an inverter that can take a battery later.
