Ghats, havelis and hills within an hour of the old city.

Udaipur gives you water, old stone and hills within a short drive. Here are five places we return to, and when each works best.
The ghats of the old city are best at sunrise, before the washing and the boats begin. The steps and arches give strong lines, and the lake behind is calm.
Old havelis, several of which allow shoots for a fee, give you carved doorways, courtyards and window light. They suit traditional outfits and work at any time of day, even in the heat.
The road towards Badi lake climbs into low hills. In the evening the light catches the water and the slopes together, and you can walk away from traffic in five minutes.
Fields outside the city, mustard in January and wheat in March, suit softer, lighter clothes and wide shots.
Finally, a rooftop in the old city at blue hour, just after sunset, with the palace lights coming on across the water. It is our favourite closing shot.
We arrange permissions, plan the route so you change outfits only twice, and keep the day under eight hours.
