Does a ceramic coating make a car scratch-proof?

What a coating protects against, what it does not, and how to tell an honest coating quote from an oversold one.

The most common misunderstanding we hear about ceramic coatings is that they make paint scratch-proof. They do not, and any detailer who tells you otherwise is overselling. Here is what a coating actually does.

A ceramic coating is a very thin hard layer, about one to two microns thick, far thinner than a human hair. It is harder than the clearcoat beneath it, so it resists the lightest marks: light wash swirls, some bird dropping etching, and the dull haze from UV and hard water. It also makes the surface slick and water-repellent, so dirt washes off easily.

What it cannot stop are real scratches. A key, a brushing bike handle, a stone at highway speed or a careless wipe with a gritty cloth will still go through it into the paint. For stone chips, only paint protection film gives meaningful protection, because the film is much thicker and soft enough to absorb impacts.

You may see coatings advertised as 9H hardness. That figure refers to a pencil hardness test and sounds impressive, but it does not mean the car cannot be scratched. Judge a coating quote by other things: is paint correction included, how long is the written warranty, what conditions are attached, and is there a yearly inspection? Ours includes correction, a three-year warranty and a free inspection and top-up wash each year. Wash the car properly, park sensibly, and a coating will keep it looking well for years, but it is a protective layer, not armour.
