What to wear for a family portrait

Choose a colour palette, not matching outfits, and dress the youngest first.

Matching white shirts and jeans can look stiff in a portrait. A better approach is to pick two or three colours that sit well together, such as rust, cream and olive, or navy, white and soft pink, and dress each person in one or two of them.

Solid colours and soft prints photograph best. Large logos, bold stripes and neon colours draw the eye away from faces. Indian wear works beautifully, especially cotton and silk in muted tones; heavy zari can catch the light, so we adjust for it.

Dress the youngest child first and build the family’s outfits around theirs. Children are happiest in clothes they can move in, so avoid anything scratchy or tight.

Bring a second outfit for the children in case of spills, and something comfortable for grandparents who may sit for longer. Iron everything the day before. If you are unsure, send us photos of the options on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.
