Three generations in one frame: planning a big family portrait

Grandparents, cousins and toddlers together: how to plan the day, seat everyone and make the session easy for elders.

Our three-generation portrait is the session families talk about for years, and also the one that needs most planning. Up to ten people, from a toddler to a great-grandmother, in one frame, in 90 minutes. It costs ₹9,500 with 20 edited photos.

Plan around the elders. Book a mid-morning slot, between 10 and 11.30 am, when grandparents are fresh and toddlers have had breakfast. Our studio is on the first floor; there are 14 steps with a rail, and we have a chair at the landing. Tell us when you book if anyone uses a walker or wheelchair, and we will set up in the garden at ground level instead. We seat grandparents first, on a sturdy bench, and build the rest of the group around them. Nobody over 70 stands for more than a few minutes.

For clothes, choose a palette of two or three colours, such as ivory, maroon and gold for a traditional look, and let each person pick within it. Grandparents often look best in what they wear on good days: a favourite silk saree or a crisp white veshti and shirt.

We start with the full group, while everyone is patient, then break into smaller frames: each couple, grandparents with all grandchildren, siblings together and a few candid moments over tea. Plan your list of groupings before the day and give it to us at the start. One person in the family should act as the organiser, so that we do not lose the toddler while finding the cousin.
